ABOUT
Jonas Vasiliauskas is a Lithuanian painter based in Kaunas. Painting from an early age, he developed a sustained engagement with observational painting that continued through his studies at Kaunas Art Gymnasium and now at the Vilnius Academy of Arts, Kaunas Faculty, where he studies Painting.
Working primarily en plein air, his practice is rooted in direct observation and an immediate response to landscape, with a particular focus on light, colour, atmosphere, and the physicality of paint. Through expressive colour, layered impasto, and shifting forms, Vasiliauskas explores the relationship between the visible world and inner experience.
Rather than seeking a literal representation of place, he approaches landscape as a means of translating perception, emotion, and states of being into paint. His work ranges from small, immediate studies made directly from nature to large-scale paintings in which colour, gesture, and rhythm become increasingly autonomous while remaining grounded in lived experience of the landscape. Alongside landscape painting, his practice includes portraiture and drawing.
Central to his practice is an ongoing exploration of the diminishing role of direct experience in an increasingly digital world. Moving between physical and digital spaces himself, Vasiliauskas considers the tension between presence and mediation, the real and the constructed, and the ways in which contemporary experience shifts between these two realities. In this context, painting en plein air becomes not only a method of observation, but also a way of returning to immediate, embodied experience.
PROCESS
I paint before thought has time to catch up.
My process is intuitive, physical and direct. I work from nature, responding to changes in light, colour and atmosphere through raw, spontaneous brushwork and layers of paint. Rather than planning each mark, I try to let the painting develop through observation, instinct and intuition.
Being present in the landscape is central to my practice. I try to respond not only to what a place looks like, but also to the experience of being there — its atmosphere, movement, energy and the way it interacts with my own state at that particular moment.
The resulting painting is therefore less a direct representation of nature than an attempt to translate that encounter into the material space of painting.
